🌘 The Wall you built between Us

I heard a knock outside. My stomach twitched in that familiar way. I hesitated, touching the knob. He’s my father—or at least, the man who raised me—but he doesn’t really know me. He doesn’t care.

“Click.” The door swung open. A cold ran through me. He looked at me, convinced I was lying about everything.

“I’ve never been confronted with my thoughts,” he said. “They don’t bother me when I’m alone.”

My body stiffened. I didn’t know what he was capable of, but it hurt. He had always demanded perfection, measured my worth in rules and obedience, and I’d spent years trying to match his impossible standard.

He leaned into the frame, gaze hard and unblinking. My legs went limp. I felt pale, almost transparent.

“Self-destructive little girl,” he said, low but cutting. “Pick yourself up. Don’t blame the world.”

I wanted to speak, to defend, to push back, but the words stuck in my throat. Everything I felt, everything I’d been through, my successes didn’t exist for him. My failures, my pain— all my fault.

A strange emptiness spread through me, icy and hollow. My hands trembled at my sides. The air grew heavy, the walls leaning closer with every word. I was visible and invisible all at once, trapped in the reflection of his indifference.

Somewhere inside, a spark flickered—a stubborn this is wrong—but it was buried beneath the weight of his presence. I stood there, pale, trembling, unseen.

“I am a bitch! I am a lover! I am a child! I am a mother! I am a sinner! I am a saint!”

The words exploded from me, jagged and shaking, rattling the walls, the air, his calm. My chest ached, my throat burned, but I kept going, naming myself like fire.

He blinked. For the first time, there was a flicker in his gaze, a hesitation I didn’t expect. I didn’t stop. Each identity cut through the quiet he’d tried to impose, shattering the cage he built around me.

“I am everything you cannot define! Everything you will never control!” I roared, voice cracking, hands clawing at the air as if tearing invisible chains.

The room vibrated with my declaration. For the first moment, the ice in my stomach thawed, not because he had changed, but because I had. I was not waiting for him to see me. I saw myself.

I slammed the door shut. The echo rattled through the room, a drumbeat of finality, shaking the walls, shaking me. I slid down slowly, back against the door, knees drawn up, letting the adrenaline ebb. My body ached, trembling with release and fear, but beneath it, a spark that wasn’t there before. I survived. I screamed. I named myself.

And for the first time, I felt the faintest tremor of control.
